Regional Information: The soil is limestone, chalky a very distinct character of the region Also the top soil itself is not that deep in Champagne, so the roots remain close to the surface not as most vines which can reach depths of up to 20 metres to reach their nutrition. The chalk subsoil holds sufficient water, during dry spells and due its porous nature also provides good drainage when it is wet to prevent roots of becoming water logged, acting a bit like a sponge.
